FIZA

Think of all the current talks about independent strong women and then go to times during the year 2000. The strong character of HERO is infact a female lead “Fiza” played by Karishma Kapoor whose struggles are immense. Starting from the first scene in movie, the family consists of a widowed mother “Nishatbi” played by Jaya Bachchan and younger brother of Fiza, “Amaan” played by then rising star Hrithik Roshan. They run by the surname of “Ikramullah” making them a muslim community and providing a base for their fight against hope.

The movie is something very simple to understand. Religion, politics, blood, tears, war and crimes shape the story. The script is established around 1993 Bombay riots where family loses their Amaan. He ends up in a terrorist group led by Murad Khan played by Manoj Bajpai. Fiza and her mother find it hard after disappearing of Amaan for a span of more than 6 years. Fiza finally decides to search him on her own after fail attempts of asking help from media and politicians. However, when she meets her brother, he is completely transformed into someone cold and hopeless. Despite trying to hide his past from his mother, Amaan ends up showing his true face which leads his mother heartbroken. She decides to end her life. Fiza, atlast, frees her brother from a meaningless life and brings the end to the story.

The play of emotions is displayed well by the actors. Overall mood of the story is sad and heartbreaking. Few songs like Karishma’s item song do reveal the commercial purpose of the film. However, the movie succeeds in reflecting very close to general and obvious behavior when it comes to facing problems and hardships by the characters of the story. Nothing is exaggerated or over-rated. Yes, it does leave you with questions and lot of ways in which movie could have been ended. However, at the end you realize that the characters deserve to be left just like they were in the film. It provides a freedom to lead character to choose her way ahead after everything was over.

Fiza is a movie to make you pray for something good to happen with characters. It is one circle of hope and failures.
